Success Stories: Richer Sounds

The first store was opened in 1978 but today there are over 50 Richer Sounds stores across the UK. Wholesale Scout looks at its success.

Entertainment retailer Richer Sounds is wholly owned by entrepreneur Julian Richer. And although it is now a multi-million pound company, the business started out fairly modestly.

Julian Richer started his business in 1973 by sourcing wholesale entertainment equipment. Starting his business at the early age of 14, he began by buying and selling on hi-fi separates and sourcing budget audio equipment whilst he was at school. A few years later the business was growing rapidly and demonstrated potential. That led to Richer hiring three members of staff and shortly after, in 1978, the first high street store was opened in London.

Ready to trade on a bigger scale, the company continued to supply budget audio equipment to consumers. The brand now competes with other larger retailers by offering competitive prices and has continued to grow – with over 50 stores now open nationwide.

Thirty years after its inception, the company employs over 400 people and supplies a variety of audio, cinema and hi-fi equipment to thousands of consumers.
